Van Veen and Jacobs Foundation Surf have done literature research(6000pages) on the way how youngsters learn in the new media age. They are typing the web-generation and describe the ‘new literacies’. For the new web generation the internet is like oxygen, they cannot imagine living without it(Oblinger and Oblinger 2005).

Interactivity is the core of the culture of the new generation. Ramaley and Zia(2005) differentiate 4 types of interactivity.

  1. Interactivity from people to people, this may be synchron or a synchron, one to many or many to many or one to one .
  2. interactivity frrom people to tools, as programs and databases
  3. interactivity from people to concepts, as simulations and animations
  4. interactivity form people to contexts, as communities and other social structures.

Time spent on teh web is not passive time, its active time. It is investigating time, its skill development and problem solving time. It’ s time analysing, evlauating. It is composing your thoughts time and writing time(Tapscott1998).

After interactivity seraching and integrating of information is the second core of activity . The web generation integrates all sorts of communication and values each form on its own merites. This generation has a shorter attention period and is used to strong stimulating visual information. Youngsters practice multi tasking, being on line, tv set is on, and doing homework at teh same time. Students like to develop ‘hypertext minds” through which they integrate information and learning environments. They also develop there own language, so called” Tweenspeak”

80% of our learning is informal, 20% is formal(Jeroen Ankersmit ROC Amsterdam).

Our traditional educational system is based on broadcasting and not and toward reproduction of knowledge. Education has to be redesigned towards functioning and working in fastmoving environments where creativity, cooperation, engagement and selfsteering are key.
