Homo Economicus Conversations with philosopher Peter Sloterdijk |

In his latest book “Zorn und Zeit” Sloterdijk argues that we as human beings are out of balance. We are constantly approached and evoked in our ‘eros’. The human being is seen as an constantly unsatisfied animal. ‘Eros’ means being dependent on others, in need of relationships, driven by our needs. For the Greek the concept of ‘Thymos’ was much more important. ‘Thymos’(Zorn) is our independent source of energy which is linked to our feeling of truth(’wahrheitverwant fühlen) and to our feeling of justice. According to Sloterdijk we denied that feeling since the Greek. The book will be published in English and Dutch in the spring.
It comes back in our literature with Alexander Dumas . We are out of balance because our driving force is our never ending shortage. When our motive is more ‘Thymos’ we become less dependent. Sloterdijk sees the human being as a double engine, one driven by eros and the other driven by ‘Thymos’. De link between eros and thymos is our ratio. He differentiates 4 types of managing our energy.
1. There is Heroic Zorn
2. Explosive Zorn, there is nothing left to fuel.
3. Standby Zorn, he calls this ‘grolling’
4. Implosive Zorn which leads to stress.
He mentioned that resentment is the best shared asset in the world.Nothing is so dangerous for the economy as a satisfied human being.Sloterdijk does not know the work of Arnold Cornelis I would be very interested to discuss similarities and differences in the thinking of both philosophers.
Peter Sloterdijk was guest at the International Institute for Philosophy the 3rd and 4th of march in leusden
